- Maedhros

Gender: Male

Race: Elf

Home: Himring

Hair: n/a

Eyes: n/a

Appearance: Tall above the average, even amongst elves, and missing his right hand at the wrist

Weapon(s) of choice: Sword

Father: Fëanor

Mother: Nerdanel

Brothers: Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod and Amras

Fic(s): NA

History: Maedhros was raised in Valinor with his brothers and cousins, and during his childhood the restless and fearsome spirit in his father’s strange heart was kept at bay by the wise councils of his mother. However when the greatest work of Fëanor’s life, the three Silmarils, were stolen by Melkor (later called Morgoth), Fëanor rose up in a fearful passion to take back the jewels. Though the Valar advised against it, Fëanor and Maedhros and his brothers swore an oath to retrieve the Silmarils, and thus they were banished from the shores of Valinor and their one driving force became the mission they had set. However Maedhros’ heart did not hold a fury like his father’s. When Fëanor decided to burn the ships that had carried them to Middle Earth and thus abandon his allied brother, Fingolfin, out upon the ice floats of the Helcaraxe, Maedhros alone stood aside and (because of the love of his friend and cousin, Fingon) would not aid in the burning. Later during an ambush upon them by Morgoth Maedhros was captured and hung by his wrist outside the Dark Lord’s fortress. Then Fingon, remembering only friendship and not the burning of the ships (for he did not know that Maedhros had refused to help) came alone to find his friend and save him, if he still lived. When Fingon found him it did not seem that Maedhros could be reached and released from the chain that bound him, and he begged Fingon to end his life. Then Thorondor the eagle came to lift Fingon up the cliff. When the chain could not be broken, Fingon was forced to cut his friend’s hand off at the wrist to free him, but Maedhros recovered and declared he would forfeit any rights to the kingship of the Noldor in favor of Fingon. His left hand became deadlier with a sword than his right had been, and though otherwise his body was unmarked, he grew more sober and cautious. Unfortunately, his unwise oath still bound him. Even when his brothers and father slowly perished, without achieving their goal, and the deeds they committed in their quest grew more terrible, still Maedhros fought with his brother Maglor at his side. When they heard tidings that Dior of Doriath had a Silmaril in his keeping, Celegorm, Curufin, and Caranthir and their servants went in search of it and killed Dior and his family. In return, before his own death, Dior slew all three brothers, but the servants of Celegorm took his young sons and abandoned them in the woods to starve. Though Maedhros searched long for them, he was unable to find them and they perished. But the jewel was not found, for Dior’s daughter, Elwing, also escaped and took the Silmaril with her. Together Maedhros and Maglor came in desperate search and razed the Havens of Sirion to take it from her, but she and her twin sons, Elrond and Elros, had already fled. They pursued her, capturing the boys, but at the last, cornered against a cliff with the sea at her back, Elwing chose to preserve the gem and cast herself into the water. Ulmo, Lord of the Sea, then raised her up as a white bird with the Silmaril on her breast, and she flew off. Maedhros and Maglor were filled with rage and despair, but they had yet enough honor that they did not kill the twin boys. Maedhros took them to his fortress and imprisoned them. Unbeknownst to him, they were mistreated by his guards, but eventually Maglor discovered the boys’ plight and they were brought out. With teaching and good treatment, Elrond and Elros came to feel affection for their captors. In the end, after long toil, Maedhros and Maglor did for a short time possess the two remaining jewels they had sought for so long, but the Silmarils burned, hopelessness came upon them, and Maedhros cast himself into a canyon where the Silmaril he held was at last lost forever.

MC Bio: Maedhros was dead before Aragorn and Legolas became friends.
